Summer Safety for Kids - Dangers and Risks

Summer poses a unique set of risks for children.  Parents must be extra vigilant during the summer months and keep a close eye on their children.  Some of these dangers are quite obvious.  For example, during the summer there is a lot more water play for children, so the incidences of drowning go up dramatically in the summer.  Bike safety is another important issues that parents have to take seriously and also is extremely important during the summer months when boys and girls are playing outside more.  Playgrounds are a great way to spend time outside during the warmer months, but a high fall could lead to a trip to the Emergency Room.

While water safety, bike safety, and play ground falls are apparent, there are other risks during the summer that are not quite so obvious, but equally important.  Sun safety, in particular, can be easy to overlook.  With the hassle of putting on sunscreen regularly, it is common for children not get enough sun protection.  Sun protective clothing, like SwimZip swimwear with UPF 50+ protection blocking 99% of UVA and UVB rays, is great way to make sure children get the sun protection they need.  Sun protective clothing and swimwear keeps kids protected from the sun - even when the best intentioned parents forget!

Just one bad sunburn can lead directly to skin cancer later in life ... and skin cancer kills thousands of people every year.  Not giving a child enough sun protection could end up being a death sentence.

Other less obvious dangers include allergies to bee stings, lighting strikes, and insect bites that transmit diseases like West Nile virus.

As the summer gets closer and closer, be sure to do your best to be prepared for dangers of summer - both the obvious risks and those equally dangerous but not quite as apparent.  Wear bike helmets, life jackets when out on the water, insect repellent, and sun protective clothing.  Have a fun, but safe summer!
